1,4 MW cooling & 2 MW heating for pharma

sustainable cooling and heating for pharmaceutical process

GE HealthCare needed a sustainable and energy efficient HVAC-R system for their process cooling and heating for cancer diagnostic products.

The old system was based on the synthetic refrigerant R134a, and GE Healthcare wanted a new energy-efficient and sustainable solution

With a combined cooling and heating solution, they eliminated synthetic refrigerants and reduced electric boilers.

Permanent magnet motors and parallel compression were chosen to enhance the COP.

FACTS

End-user: GE HealthCare
Segment: Pharma
Customer: Mandal Kjøle Service AS
Background: Rebuild of production processes for pharma

Products:

  • 2 SteelXL
  • Permanent magnet motors on all compressors
  • Parallel compression

Capacities:

  • 1400 kW Chiller3/10°C
  • 100 kW glycol chiller -11/-15°C
  • 1890 kW heat recovery, 30/60°C

COMBINED COOLING, FREEZING AND HEATING SOLUTION

The climate solution basically is a combined chiller and heat pump.

The temperatures needed makes it perfect for a CO2 solution as the ratio matches with less cooling need compared to heating.

With 2 systems and one almost covering the full cooling need, and many standard compressors the system has a high redundancy and is very reliable in operation.

Heat Recovery
Heat recovery is used for HVAC heating and thereby eliminates the need for electric boilers.

Permanent Magnet Motors
Permanent Magnet Motor compressors have been added which will ensure an extra 7-8% energy savings.

Configurable CO2 Solutions

A PERFECT MATCH

  • Matching cooling and heating ratio
  • Applicable length and height restrictions for narrow space
  • Redundancy
  • Energy saving options
  • Efficient and flexible regulation of capacity
  • Commissioning for the highest energy efficiency

Going forward, GE HealthCare will be installing heat pumps and cooling systems based on natural refrigerants only
